Last year I went to see the Edward Burra exhibiton at Pallant House Gallery and came across a book in their bookshop called Printed in Watford.

It was a catalogue of multimedia work from The Watford School of Art jammed full of different paper stock and intriguing texture and collage. The only further information I could find about the school was about one of it's tutors artist Peter Schmidt (friend of Brian Eno, David Toop Dieter Roth). Schmidt also did the cover for the Eno Fripp Evening Star LP. Continuing investigation in to the school and Mr Schmidt has proven very rewarding..

I am especially liking his monographs some of which could be seen in Blofelts's Alp top brainwasher in 'Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

In 1931 a proposal was put to the Budapest Works Council to build a whole street in the Bauhaus style based on a similar project in Stuggart. Although some of the houses have been rebuilt they have still kept the style in essence. The street runs alongside a small creek called The Devils Creek and is definitely worth the small journey out of the centre. There are more images and information here.

Pendle Hill Witches

Last week on BBC 4 there was a documentary " The Pendle Witch Child" presented by poet Simon Armitage, based around Jennet Device the child who testified against her family who were subsequently executed as witches. Aside from some rather annoying animations depicting some of the historical characters it's a great overview of the Pendle Witches and the trials socio-political implications as well as Jennet's own demise. IT also singles out the first forensic investigation into a witch trial, where science and superstition collide.

Plus it features Ronald Hutton on more than one occasion which is always an absolute joy! For further reading here's a great interview with him.

Whilst fannying around un-riotous Brighton waiting for Alex to finish work I inevitably found myself in Infinity Foods looking at the packages of grains pulses and variants which for some reason I find endless fascinating. I will admit I have always liked the branding and ethos of Dove Farms flour but these two handsome packages caught my eye and I felt they deserved a post. Very Angie Lewin.

St Peter's Seminary and BOAC

St Peter's Seminary is a disused Roman Catholic seminary in Cardross built 1961-66. It was built by Scottish architects Gillespie, Kidd & Coia and is considered

to be one of the most important modernist buildings in Scotland. GKC are well known for their application of modernism to institutional buildings such as churches and university buildings. Heavily influenced by Le Corbusier the architectural critic Jonathan Glancey wrote,

"The architecture of Le Corbusier translated well into Scotland in the 1960s. Although the climate of the south of France and west of Scotland could hardly be more different, Corbu's roughcast concrete style, could, in the right hands, be seen as a natural successor or complement to traditional Scottish tower houses with their rugged forms and tough materials".

Although there are no immediate plans for regeneration of the building it has been the site of many art programmes both permanent and temporary courtesy of NVA and the Scottish Arts Council.

Another Gillespie, Kidd & Coia building was the BOAC offices on Buchanan Street in Glasgow, the fab interior is shown below.

Habitat Forum was a non-governmental people’s forum held in Vancouver in 1976. It was an adjunct to the UN Habitat Conference on Human Settlements, which was at the time the largest conference the UN had ever assembled. It was the first time the world community met to discuss the growing challenges of urbanization, the accelerating human migration from rural to urban areas, urban problems including clean water, sanitation, poverty and homelessness, as well as the nascent field of sustainable urban design.

The above text and image was taking from Lindsay Brown at Ouno Design as part of research for her book on the Habitat Forum - for more information and for events in Vancouver visit the forum site. I can't wait for the book it will be an amazing insight into Habitat which seems to have been greatly overlooked.

A Hugh Evelyn Excursion into Architecture 'Fairground Architecture' by David Braithwaite. This book gives an account of the history of the fairgrounds development from pagan festivals to medieval trading fairs and how certain popular entertainments at these fairs became principle attractions. Looking specifically at 'Joy Rides', 'Joints' and 'Transportation' the book forms the first comprehensive study of such a subject. It also has a remarkable early plan of Nottingham's Goose Fair from 1965 with a key to each symbol- Juvenile and Tipping Vampire Jets are currently my favourites. Although I don't remember them as the bare knuckle fighting tent seems to have taken up all my childhood memories of Goose Fair....

Topiary and Treppanation

Here are some images taken at Beckley Park in Oxfordshire. Not only home to fabulous examples of topiary some of which are over 100 years old but also home to Amanda Fielding, artist and scientific director and founder of The Beckley Foundation. Fielding is perhaps best known for her self-trepanation in the early 1970's, and is an expert in the research of expanding consciousness as well as taking a huge role within of the independent study of psychology and neurophysiology. She will be talking at The Breaking Convention in Canterbury as well as speaking and showing her film " Hearbeat in the brain" (documenting her trepanation) at the ICA as part of the Strange Attractor Salon that will run alongside the Nathanial Mellors show.

This incredibly sincere documentary was totally unbeknownst to me until my fabulous artist friend Arabella Campbell sent me it the other day. Directed by film maker Ralph Arlyck whilst he was a graduate film student in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco, Arlyck casually interviews the four year old Sean, capturing his perspective on smoking weed, the police and finding wearing shoes as 'creepy'.

It was a multi-disiplinary affair discussing ideas of darkness within modern philosophy, physics, mysticism, speculative realism and literature. This got me in to searching for more and soon I came across this nice example of soviet film with a traditional rendering of a folk story, it was even nicer when I found out my mum did the voice of Snegurochka!

The Believer magazine's film 2010 edition included this excellent DVD of Karpo Godina's short films, a great slice of the Yugoslavian Black Wave. Here's my favourite from the DVD 'The Gratinated Brains of Pupilia Ferkeverk' (1970), featuring the performative troop Pupilia Ferkeverk.

Plus some John Whitney extracts from 1961 in anticipation of the screening at the BFI next Thursday. Unbelievable analogue graphics and precursor to Scanomation.

Northern Winter Begins!

Tonight for the first time in 400 years there will be a total lunar eclipse of the moon on a winter solstice! The darkest day in the year will be celebrated with the eclipse seen from Northern America, Greenland and Iceland. Luckily I am just off Vancouver Island although it is currently quite overcast with snow clouds.

Researching a series of unexplained incidents at this historic building, artist Blue Firth uncovered a first-hand account of apparent poltergeist activity in the artists’ studios.

While patrolling the 18th century corridors one night in 2008, Red Collar guard Nathan Phillips experienced something that prevented him from finishing his shift: ‘When I got back to where the skeletons are kept, the doors all slammed shut — like boom, boom, boom one after another. I tried to make out what it could be and checked all the doors again. I got to the same point in the same sequence and the bangs happened all over again. I didn’t finish my patrol that night.’

To make sense of what happened to Nathan, Blue has collaborated with parapsychologist Dr David Luke and writer Mark Pilkington. As preparatory research they undertook investigative training sessions with the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP).

I recently got my hands on a copy of this from the London Library. As expected all the stories were strange and beguiling, the best of which were, "Minuke" and "Chains". I am binding a small number of limited edition soft back copies of a couple of the stories, email me if you would like a copy.
Also there was a great radio version of Minuke performed by Moon Wiring Club as part of the Weird Tales for Winter week, aired earlier this year on Resonance.

I usually spend time relishing in educational programmes from dates earlier than I was born, 60's /70's aesthetics, black and white instructional school books. Lets not overlook the fabulous things below provided by the Look and Read a series aimed at improving children's literacy skills. The programme presents fictional stories in a serial format, but what I did not know was that some of the great educational songs, mainly from Badger Girl and Spywatch were composed by Peter Howell!

Earlier today on Radio Four there was a great follow up documentary on Masquerade, the illustrated puzzle book from 1979 by Kit Williams (above). 30 years since it was published, it is still a huge source of inspiration and delight - some gardens in the Cotwolds are even holding their own treasure hunt this summer for a charm bracelet its the Cotswold Garden Charm Offensive Treasure Trail. On Sunday we went on the Keith and Dufftown Railway, crossing the river Isla seven times on its way to Keith. We also had to stop on the return journey to let some chickens pass out of the way and off the tracks! Also spotted on the line was a black cat and some deer. Thank you Bella for the pictures.

Neighbours

This humble dwelling , once known as Mortlach is my neighbour. It was built in the 12th century by the Black Comyns and extended in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle fell into the ownership of the House of Douglas in the early 14th century when the Comyns were reduced by Robert The Brucs. In turn King James II wiped out the Douglases and it was granted to John Stuart the first Earl of Atholl. Balvenie Castle served as a garrison during the Jacobite Rebellion. It was abandoned in 1720s but was last used by the Hanovarian forces of the Crown (under the Duke of Cumberland) leading up to the Battle of Culloden.
